Written by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and Brazilian-Panamanian singer-songwriter Erika Ender, it was originally intended to be ballad. They invited Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee to join them in producing a more upbeat urban reggaetón song that was released in January 2017.

Despacito was well received however, sadly, it is often difficult to gain mainstream North American recognition for Latin songs. Therefore a well known English speaking singer was sought and, in April 2017, the song was re-recorded and released with Canadian Justin Bieber included.

The song made No.1 in 39 countries worldwide, gained a Latin Grammy for Best Song of the Year 2017 and is certainly one of the best Spanish language musical tracks in pop history. On You Tube, across the years, it has become the first video to reach 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 billion views making it their most popular music video of all time.
